About the Winter Deer at Creek Painting
This winter scene is a painting that I began way back in 2012 while teaching an art class to paint snow scenes. I then picked this painting out of my studio storage on February 1st, 2021 and decided to complete it.
The setting for this painting came from my photos taken in Cades Cove, Smoky Mountains Tennessee, while the mountains were iced over. That day while my wife drove through the Cove slowly, my niece, Alli and I walked the land and took hundreds of photos. We saw more deer and bear on this day than I had ever seen in the cove before during my many years of visiting this place. I returned home to my studio with loads of great references for future paintings.
In 2020 our lives were completely shut down allowing me to focus more on my painting production and to think a lot about what I do and why I do it as an artist. I made a commitment to go back and complete a lot of the paintings that I have started as teaching projects and then put them into storage.
The one thing that I am pursuing through my paintings is the feeling of being in a place of peace and beauty that gives God glory for His creation. To me these places are pure and raw, untouched by the hand of commercialism.
This painting is also an example of the technique that I am developing that I call "color weaving" where I layer my colors in thick strokes with a liner brush, recreating the rough textures that we see in nature.
